Florida has more than 1,000 springs – the largest concentration in the world. Within the Northwest Florida Water Management District, there are more than 250 springs.

Overview

The District is dedicated to the protection of Northwest Florida’s springs, which provide natural resource, recreational, and economic benefits for residents and visitors alike.

Geologists estimate that there are more than 1,000 springs in Florida, representing the largest concentration of freshwater springs on Earth. Within the Northwest Florida Water Management District, approximately 250 springs have been identified.

Why Springs Are Important

Springs and their associated rivers and bays have ecological, cultural, and economic values. They provide important habitat for wildlife and plants and represent the visible part of the Floridan Aquifer, the underground supply of most of Florida’s drinking water. Springs also provide recreational activities and an opportunity to connect with the natural environment.
